Correct Gate Height

What is your experience on installing gates between pastures?

On a four foot high gate what should the average distance be between the bottom of the gate and the ground below it (when it is closed)?

Our bottom wire is usually around ankle high, so that would be apprx 4" off the ground.

I put ours about 8" above the ground so that i am not pushing to much snow when I need to swing them open or close.
