Controlling type 2 diabetes with diet

Help Support CattleToday:

canned tuna is still pretty cheap. I would sure get that before 1 lb of baloney..
10lb bag of leg qtrs at the local H-E-B are $4.86.
Less than $.49/lb....
Of course, you still gotta cook them.
No HEB where I'm at; that's a pretty good deal.

I've never seen whole wheat and white bread priced the same. A pound of bologna at Wal-mart is $1.48. The only thing you're getting cheaper than that is bulk or whole chicken, and a significant portion of that will be inedible. If you can make fresh meats and veggies cheaper than a 34 cent box of mac and cheese, good for you.
I survived on mac and cheese so I could get out of college with no debt. Taco Tuesdays were the only time I didn't eat mac and cheese. Back then mac was ten for a buck.

I'm not going to argue with you. Maybe it's just that I know how to shop.

We did fasting for a while and it worked okay. We ate 5 meals per week with nothing on Monday or Wednesday. After a while it quit working. Back on Atkins now and it's working better but will play out in time

Sounds like you found something that works and that's good. It's interesting that you say you do eat some sweets. The energy drinks surprised me too, which ones do you drink? Is the carbonated water Topo Chico?

I've admittedly got a terrible diet. I'd have a really hard time not eating bread and corn. Sugary snacks I could do without. For the last year there's days were I go through a period of just not feeling right then later on I'll feel fine. It's got to be someting I'm eating or not getting in my system. I also eat allot of fast food when I'm working. Neither of us have a craving for fast food like allot of people do so on our days off we eat very liitle fast food unless we are on the road. I've read about the diet your on and people talk about how hard it is for someone that's on the go or works shift work to maintain. I'm not trying to say you don't have a hectic schedule but I've just read that's It's hard to maintain. Especially if you have an active social life which luckily we do not have. 😄

Topo Chico is good. My favorite is the 1877 heb store brand in glass bottles.
Like GB I drink at least a pot of coffee a day and yes the occasional zero sugar energy drink. You gotta remember I've got a titanium heart that runs on batteries.. no matter how much caffeine I consume my heart rate remains the same.... kinda like a super hero you know.....I'm thinking " the electric fence". Lol

I don't believe that precludes eating healthy. One of my favorite meals is Raman (cheap) with fresh veggies cooked with the noodles. I know I can buy fresh meats for less per pound than bologna, and eggs are still reasonable compared to processed meats. Portion control is easier using fresh foods too. Every white bread I see has the same brand of whole wheat right next to it that is priced the same. A lot of the cheaper breads have less added sugar.

The real issue is convenience. People that don't want to cook eat crap. If they can't microwave something they feel abused. And then they have to finish the 64 ounces of chemically enhanced and sugar laden lasagna because they don't like leftovers.
Ramen noodles are really bad for you

Thanks to all who contributed contributed to this thread so far. It has been an interesting read. I have a Dr. Endo (diabetes) as well as a Dr. Cardio. (stents).

I'm interested in the diet plans you are on ... if it works for you it might work for me. Intermittent fasting deems to help with weight control for me. Changes in eating habits are hard to make stick, at least for me.

I will continue to sit in the shadows and follow this thread.

I absolutely would encourage anyone to seek advice from a doctor. But it certainly will not hurt anyone struggling with blood sugar issues to eat a no sugar,no carb diet for 4 days. Then observe how you feel and how your numbers look. Then give the info to your doctor.
Lots of folks on here are self proclaimed financial experts we see it in the post all the time. The best hands down,no doubt about it financial investment you'll ever make is in your health. I'm confident that advice is true.

Medical advice from a cattle forum? Sometimes there are even issues with the cattle advice/opinions here.

I would not replace my doctor with a cattle forum. But for sure - real peoples' experience and results are very valuable - not to be dismissed. I find this discussion informative and might help someone. I suspect there is as much personal bias and incorrect direction within the medical community as there is anywhere else. Hard to argue with real measured results. Don't blindly trust anyone - your doctor, website or cattle forum. Open mind and good logic won't hurt.

The Atkins diet is a good place to start, but as has been told to me years ago, "you have to read the book". As Fence and others have said, it goes against most everything we have been taught about nutrition for most of our life. Fence is on the more extreme side of the program for a reason. For him that is what it takes to get results. Results are what you are looking for. Always consult your doctor but don't hesitate to get another opinion. Remember, Cattle Forums are only good for important stuff like National Security and Religious imperatives.

Well I didn't get my information from CT, but I did spend (wasted) years listening to many different Doctors, professionals, even diabetic specialist. It appears they all had something in common... writing prescriptions.
They did all say "eat better and exercise"...but you still have to take pills and DON'T quit taking them. I like how they always threaten you. They had convinced my that there was no other way than pills.

I was heading for disaster just like the rest of my family...that was on medication. I thought my only choice was medication...then I bought a book for $27. There is no magic, but it is a good food program that you follow. Yes it really sucks at first.

In less than 1 year, I lost 50 lbs, have very little body fat, I had incredible energy every day and all my blood work numbers were all of the sudden great.

It was the best decision I ever made.
Diabetes Destroyer works...if you work it. I am living proof.
#1 ingredient is willpower !

People get overwhelmed...take 1 day at a time. If you can make it 1 day then you can make 2....I know it sounds stupid but I have lost way to many family and friends to this horrible disease to not try to help anyone that wants to change their life.

It's my understanding that that book is no longer available. I do have it in electronic (pdf) format if anyone wants it. Just email me at [email protected].

evidently, it is available via Amazon. and other places.

Some statins will drive blood sugar up and apparently become permanent after a while. Reading about Lipitor it says it may make you a diabetic, but the good outweighs the bad. My 86 yo mother never had a problem until she was put on Lipitor with glucose levels and she takes glipizide now.
I am on Lipitor and my glucose has rising for the past few years also.
