Hello,
We are new to the business and this has been an interesting year as of yet. We are dealing with cold wet weather and therefore scours. I was wondering if there are any contraindications of using terramycin scour tablets with nuflor? Thank you for any help :)

I will use sulfamethazine tablets with nuflor and have no adverse reactions...The main thing with scours is to keep the calf hydrated so electrolytes are a must and then an antibiotic to help with a secondary infection...

I am not familiar with terramycin scour tablets but I do not think there would be any combined reaction. However you should always consult your vet when using meds combined with others ,just like you would ask your pharmacist before you yourself mixed to meds together..

I don't know of any contraindications of those two together, however....

...don't give Terrimycin with milk as it binds to calcium, which renders it ineffective.

...keep in mind one of the side effects of Nuflor is diarrhea, not generally a good idea for a calf that's already scouring.

We would like to thank you for your responses. They are helpful.

.

Milkmaid this is a blanket statement which has never been backed up..It is the statement made by companies to protect their @ss, like when Viagra says if an erection lasts for more than 12 hours contact your doctor. Meaning it has happended but is very rare and is probably not linked to the drug at all.

Like I said before consult your vet.......

Two questions...

1) Do you have a link to information proving it is a blanket statement?

2) If it were simply a blanket statement, then why is it not on other antibiotic labels -- esp antibiotic labels from the same manufacturer?

FWIW, I have seen diarrhea as a side effect of Nuflor, ie when I was using it to treat a young calf for pneumonia and then had to treat them for scours.

I didn't know that, but I do know that terramycin is not very effective against scours and maybe that is part of the reason why . A ton of milk replacers have terramycin in them .

As far as the TM Nuflor question, it's not a combination I would use for scours, but I don't think there is a reaction between the two .

The fact that calves get pneumonia and scour all at the same time is common knowledge,,and yes I have seen it first hand because it happened before nuflor was even around your calf more than likely was going to start scouring anyways..

I had a long conversation with my vet just yesterday and he as well as many vets had just gotten back from a conference (not put on by drug suppliers) which involved new research and case studies.. Nuflor came up as well as Banamine in our conversation..Nuflor is still one of the best broad spectrum antibiotics out there for now and is very successful in combination of things as to treating scours , remember scours are a symptom/result of a bigger problem..Like I said they are just covering their butts...

My mother is on blood pressure medication with a diuretic and some of the side effects are excessive urinating and low blood pressure.. 8)

BTW banamine is very very hard on a calf's stomach and is a huge factor in perforated ulcers if over used ..

Larry the woman has probably ran for the hills already so I think it would be the man,, and NO I do not have personal experience with it ,,,,,,,,who has time for such nonsense.. :lol2:

I also thought that is what was in medicated milk replacer.. :?

A sulfa based bolus is best, like calf span etc. on scours..

Terramycin is Oxytetracyline and is very effective treating scours. Oxytetracyline is also in some medicated milk replacers. I would recommend this for treating scours with electolytes.
Ask your Vet.
It is very important to treat early, first sign in a change in calf manure or look for runny yellow or white smear on a calves back end and give it a bolus. Will act quickly and you will see improvement overnight. Treated early there is no need to withhold milk. Once a calve gets run down, dehydrated, it will be a lot more of a challenge to save.

the only contradiction i can see is you are using two types of antibiotics at once. Since most scours are viral, the antibiotics are more for prevention of secondary infections. Just me personally, not knocking anyones way of treatment, I would save the nuflor for when i need it most.
If i am going for a sulfa tablet, use sulfa injectable. terrimycin tablet, terrimycin injectable. Keep in the same drug family. Build up less resistance

So what's your point? because other medications have side effects listed that we know are true, the side effects listed on the label of Nuflor must not be true? :???:

Terramycin given with milk also tends to destroy teeth.
