Contaminated Honey from China

Help Support CattleToday:

Bluestem, I spend about 100 days per year in China. I travel from North to South and East to West in just about every province. China was a train wreck waiting to happen and now it has started. To see the massive amounts of factories all over the place is a shock. With this comes competition of huge porportions in a governmental system that naturally breeds corruption. Communism and Socialism is a catalyst for corruption. Due to the competition some businesses resort to cutting corners to undercut cost or meet a demand. This practice is very unsafe. Put this together with the corrupt government inspectors getting kick backs, a governmental policy of disregard for life and normal living standards and expectations that are 3rd world and these types of incidents are going to happen. The american companies that are in bed with the Chinese are putting us all at risk healthwise as well as financial risk. Especially food products. Those should NEVER be bought from a 3rd world country.

That gives me pause. I think we have to have free trade, but we need a lot more inspection. And why would a business with a good reputation, like Sue Bee, resort to this sort of sleaziness.
The buy-local movement is only going to grow.

We've had the same problem with Chinese crawfish containing traces of antibiotics. I noticed the Dollar General brand charcoal was made in China. No thanks, don't want any Chinese charcoal on my grill.

Oh come on....... what's a little bit of poison, a little bit of lead, hamburger buns made from cardboard, or any of that got to do with us supporting those poor people in China. It's all about "free trade" that our politicians have so given us. It's out patriotic duty to buy as much as we can from China in order that we may continue to destroy any manufacturing job left in Amerika. Once we do this, we can all get a check each month from our government and life will be grand.

(And as always, bend over and grab your ankles.) Please kiss me when you're done.

Last I heard you all don't have a free trade agreement with china you choose to trade with them..like Canada does unfortunately ,because the average consumer does not give two sh@ts where the product comes from as long as it is cheap... The free trade agreement is NAFTA and last I heard china wasn't part of it. However Canada is, and we are not trying to kill you but we are treated worse than the fricken chinese at times..

I read labels like crazy...when I come to China, it goes back on the shelf. Ticks me off no end!

Not referring to NAFTA and that free trade agreement......

Referring to the point that our politicians are giving trade access to our country that is pretty much free.

Canada is our friend.

I don't understand why our friends to the north are so hung up on NAFTA. NAFTA is no more than a wart on a pig's nose that's coming through our front door. Afterall, what does Canadian and USA trade got to do with China investing huge amounts of money in deep water ports in Mexico. What does this have to do with plans to widen the Panama Canal to allow mega ships capable of transfering 12,000 plus containers? What does this have to do with plans to build a super highway through Mexico, USA and into Canada? What does this have to do with the Supreme Court's decision in Kelo v City of New London that now makes it ok to condemn private land for the benefit of a private corporation? What does NAFTA have to do with the US spending millions in our tax dollars to build a Mexican Customs facility in Kansas City? Probably nothing I guess and if you believe what they say, we are just going to be rolling in the money.

The U.S. population represents just 5 percent of the world's consumers and business customers and its $14 trillion a year Gross Domestic Product is approximately 25 percent of the world's GDP. The other 95 percent of U.S. business customers and 75 percent of the world's GDP remains abroad, most importantly in the fast-growing emerging markets around the world, where hundreds of millions of new emerging middle-class consumers clamor for America's unparalleled quality, value and safety in goods and services.

Of course, they neglect to mention that most of our manufacturing jobs have gone to China. Since China has now figured out they can get the work done cheaper in India so they don't have to pay these high wages. (Afterall, a man making $40/week will really cut into your profits.) Of course since there are more english speaking people in India than there are in the whole of the USA, Canada and Britain, I guess its OK that they get these jobs. Afterall, they do at least speak english so its about the same.

Oh, just a couple other things they neglect to mention. $14 trillion dollars sounds like an impressive GDP but when you consider the fact that we now add in the $6 trillion dollars of gov't spending to this figure its not that impressive. Personally, I've never considered bearuracracy a product. I definitely wouldn't willingly pay for it. So based on this thought, I'd say our GDP is only $8 trillion and shrinking. As I've said before, this free trade is not free. It will come at a cost to both our countries. Believe it or not. JMO

I don't understand why our friends to the north are so hung up on NAFTA.

I never said I was hung up on NAFTA Jo, but it is what it is..I was stating a fact that China exports and we buy ,,,they are not part of NAFTA. The fact is NAFTA is a bunch of BS and only seems to work or be enforced when it benefits someone....

The world survives on exports and imports we need this to survive ourselves as individuals. However I do feel that if a country has no safety regulations they should be cut off ..BUT since China "owns " a lot of the US that is not going to happen is it..All we can do as consumers is what Alice said, if it's made in China boycott..like that will really happen because that big screen tv one doesn't really need is cheap at wally world,,but hey it's made in China ...who cares the TV will be great in our home that we can't really afford.

Hubby surprised me the other day with 2 more haysaver bale feeders. He went to UFA first but they have to be ordered in because they come from China..they used to be made in Canada up until a couple of years ago. So he went to a local dealer (2 hours away)who build them on site with all Canadian made products,,,,,,,,,THEY WERE CHEAPER than the Chinese crap.. So that makes no sense,, why are they even outsourced if it is cheaper to make them here .... :?

Let's hope that Obama and whatever leader Canada has at the time put their heads together and figure something out to actually protect us from crap and help us at the same time.. I would love to finally have a government work for us the people and not the other way around..

It's a brand new year, anything is possible.. :D

Sorry, I misunderstood. I just keep hearing Nafta nafta nafta and that's the least of our problems. Ya'll Canadians trade with Cuba too don't cha? Wish we did. Its getting pretty tough sneaking those cigars through customs now. I think the best way to get them here is just to buy them from a custom's officer if you know one. They always have plenty.

There is a religious community near me that I respect a lot. These people are down to earth and what they do is always buy from within their community and sell outside the community as much as possible. In doing this, more wealth comes into their community than leaves the community. Because of this, most everyone within their community has prospered quite well. I've always thought we should conduct our economics policies this way rather than taxing and regulating industry to other countries. Of course I was told world trade doesn't work the same way.

Many countries operate under this same principal and have done quite well. Any nation that has more exports than imports is doing this whether they realise it or not. Our trade problems are for the same reasons as the border problems, the energy problems, the corruption problems.. DC

Labelling is a difficult thing to understand. All I can do is relate to Canada and it is changing - but as it stands today it is still very misleading.

New laws are coming into effect in Canada that will change this - however:

To be considered "Product of Canada" - all that is required is the packaging of the product. So it can be imported from any country and then packaged.

Reading labels does not always solve the problem - it simply reduces them.

As we are talking honey, the Billy Bee brand in Canada imports a lot of honey and packages it - calling it product of Canada. Bee Maid does the same thing. In fact this honey was created in a foreign country and is sold as a product of Canada.

Anytime you buy a tin can of fruit in Canada - it is almost 90% imported fruit. There is no longer even one company that creates commercial canned food from Canadian product in Canada any more.

As for trade - Canada is the largest single trading partner of the U.S of A.

Reference: http://dataweb.usitc.gov/scripts/cy_m3_run.asp

Canada and the U.S. of A. do more than a BILLION dollars a day of trade

Reference: http://www.census.gov/foreign-trade/top ... lance.html

You would not know this as the major U.S. of A. news networks do not cover the northern neighbour very well - no stock market reports, very little business news and certainly no other financial news.

Certainly if you ask the average American who is their largest trading partner Canada will not likely be the first name on their lips.

Beef is a small fart in the wind when compared to natural resources and industrial trade between our two countries.

Seems they like to cover the weather in Canada once in a while though! :D

Financial news is always about China and Japan - which rank number two and four behind Canada (first) and Mexico ranks third in trade with the U.S. of A.

Trade and labelling - I think I am one of the few Canucks who does not disagree with COOL - and for sure that makes me unpopular in the Canadian cattle industry. :)

I just want the same COOL in this country. And I want it APPLIED!!!!

Regards

Bez

If you can't find the point of origin on the label this might be handy:

The whole world is scared of China-made 'black hearted goods'. Can you differentiate which one is made in the USA , Philippines , Taiwan or China ?

Here's how the first 3 digits of the barcode is the country code wherein the product was made.

Example: All barcodes that start with 690, 691, 692, thru 695 are all MADE IN CHI NA.

Barcodes that start with 471 come from Taiwan

This is our right to know, but the government and related department never educate the public, therefore we have to RESCUE ourselves.

Nowadays, Chinese businessmen know that consumers do not prefer products 'Made in China ', so they don't show from which country it originates.

However, you may now refer to the barcode. Remember if the first 3 digits are in the range 690-695, then it is Made in China .

00 ~ 13 USA & CANADA
30 ~ 37 FRANCE
40 ~ 44 GERMANY
49 ~ JAPAN
50 ~ UK
57 ~ Denmark
64 ~ Finland
76 ~ Switzerland and Liechtenstein
471 ~ Taiwan
480 ~ Philippines
628 ~ Saudi Arabia
629 ~ United Arab Emirates

690- 695 ~ China
740-745 ~ Central America

Please inform your family and friends for them to be aware.
I printed this e-mail out & carry it in my wallet…..

To reply to Bez's post about Billy Bee and Bee Maid...from a honey producer...
Billy Bee was bought by McCormick foods (spice) something to that effect. They are American. Hopefully they will curtail the import of illegal honey.
Beemaid however is 100% Canadian owned. The get their honey from the three prairie provinces and BC and no where else. The do not source from China or any where... Bee Maid is a co-operative, owned by the beekeeping farmers. Bee Maid does export the honey around the world. In fact, Germany sends Beemaid the jars they want use for honey, glass only, and Bee Maid fills it with 100% Canadian Honey. Just one instance of Bee Maid exporting honey.
If you read Billy Bee's honey it will say "Canada #1" Turn the label to the backside and read in small fine print where the honey comes from. It will say product of... but you have to look for it and look with a high powered lens.
To Understand how they can call it Canada # 1 you have to know how they grade honey.
Honey is graded by color, moisture, and clarity. To say Canada # 1 means it meet those requirements. Is it right? No. The Canadian Honey council wants the regulations changed so that Canada # 1 means a #1 product from Canada.
One of the ways they are going about getting these changes applied is to regulate all honey producers by getting them federally inspected. Once all honey producers are federally inspected, then there will be standards which then can be applied to world honey imported into Canada. CFIA would conduct the inspections , and they would apply to the honey house, where honey is extracted, to the drugs used in the hives. Mostly it is just a bunch of paperwork and good management practices in extracting honey.

Thanks RR for all that honey info. I never really paid attention to it so had to take out my bee maid from the cupboard and do some reading..I always thought Canada #1 meant it was 100 percent Canadian. :?

No, "Canada No 1" refers to the grade of honey. Misleading I know but hopefully the laws will change. I am not postive but more than likely the USDA has their grading system as well. Always turn the jar to the back and read the fine print. That is where it will tell you if the honey you are eating is blended, pure, or from another country.

I've always wondered if the #7 stood for Tennessee, or the number of the recipe or the number of the girlfriend.

I believe it stands for the recipe Jo I may be wrong but I think I read that somewhere in my research and I conducted lots of research and taste testing to be sure that they all tasted the same had the same fragrance, body.mellowness and after effects on the morning after, after doing careful studies over a prolonged period the results were conclusive that at least the outcome was the same after consuming large quantities ,the next morning you had a wretching feeling in your stomach,a jackhammer in your head, vision distortd and your equilibrium was out of kelter, also had the effect of making you tougher than you actually were we call this the superman effect
The only way to rectify this outcome was to start the test over as soon as these symptoms showed themselves therefore delaying the symptoms to a later time this usually resulted in a comatose sleep pattern for several hrs and upon waking the symptoms usually reoccurred which usually resulted in more studies

It may even be printed on the bottom of the bottle but can only be read after consuming the whole bottle
