Went to lawn mower shop for chainsaw chains. The youngsters were talking about old timers saying that the signs predict a cold hard winter, They looked at me and noticed that I being 73 and said old timer what do you think. I said that yes the squirrels are busy gathering nuts. I said that might mean cold hard winter might be in story. But it could mean that they thought there would be another dry year like a cattleman trying to bale and store enough hay to make it through hard times. Then again they may be capitalist squirrels and trying to corner the market and sell when nuts go higher.

Can any one give us a post on corn shucks. Are they thicker than usual. Not any corn in my area to check. This is considered a prediction of a hard winter.

My corn wasn't really any different than average that I saw... but I tell you what I was moving hay bales tonight and I have been keeping the ac pumping on the tractor well tonight the dial was turned to heat and HIGH it was chilly

But.............--have you been collecting more firewood than usual?

It was October and the Indians on a remote reservation asked their new Chief if the coming winter was going to be cold or mild.

Since he was a Chief in a modern society he had never been taught he old secrets.

When he looked at the sky he couldn't tell what the winter was going to be like.

Nevertheless, to be on the safe side he told his tribe that the winter was indeed going to be cold and that the members of the village should collect firewood to be prepared.

But being a practical leader, after several days he got an idea. He went to the phone booth, called the National Weather Service and asked, "Is the coming winter going to be cold?"

"It looks like this winter is going to be quite cold," the meteorologist at the weather service responded.

So the Chief went back to his people and told them to collect even more firewood in order to be prepared.

A week later he called the National Weather Service again. "Does it still look like it is going to be a very cold winter?"

"Yes," the man at National Weather Service again replied, "it's going to be a very cold winter."

The Chief again went back to his people and ordered them to collect every scrap of firewood they could find.

Two weeks later the Chief called the National Weather Service again. "Are you absolutely sure that the winter is going to be very cold?"

"Absolutely," the man replied. "It's looking more and more like it is going to be one of the coldest winters ever."

"How can you be so sure?" the Chief asked.

The weatherman replied, "We're sure it's going to be cold because the Indians are collecting firewood like crazy!"

Checked the permission seeds out last night and everything was a spoon. That's supposed to mean we will have snow.
I haven't a clue what any of that means. Permission seeds? spoon?

Split a persimmon seed in half like a hamburger bun, and you should see a knife, a fork, or a spoon.

Persimmon seed signs: A knife shape indicates a cold icy winter (where wind will cut through you like a knife). A fork shape means a mild winter. A spoon shape stands for a shovel to dig out of the snow

:cowboy:

Anybody got a good test for places where there are no persimmons? :lol2:
We had a nasty spring, a weird summer and, so far, a really destructive autumn. I'm getting pretty nervous about what this winter is gonna bring.
