My wife and I were down with Covid for the better of three weeks. I avoided the ten day hospital stay she has and we are returning to our old selves slowly.
Our South African couple that arrived in July did a wonderful job of keeping cattle fed and things running as smoothly as possible while we were away and returned to recuperate. I hadn't seen our cow herd since Dec. 15 until last Friday when I went to help feed at the lower places. These are the mature cows coming 5 years and older. They have been getting lick tubs and the late cut, old bottom swamp grass haylage we made in Sept. The temperatures here were as low as -47 celcius and stayed below -20 for about 3 weeks. Quite a shock for a couple who had never seen below -4 in their lives! We are so proud of Josh and Meg!

Glad you guys are okay. Good thing you had some help around.
Thank you, you are very right we were fortunate. I forgot to mention another young guy who raked for us last summer stepped up to feed calves and keep the yard plowed. He is not a cattleman yet but he kept the bunches here well fed. Missed a couple of sick ones that died but we are proud of him just the same.

Looks like the cows came through the cold snap in fine shape.
I bet your couple from SA are finding -4 type temps much warmer than they did prior to experiencing -47.

Yes, for sure! They adapted quite well though and took everything in stride. We were in contact with them morning and night. A little coaching and they handled it all quite well.
