I read in the paper today that Louisiana (the last state to ban cockfighting), this past week, banned cockfighting. It inferred that it was a difficult and long fought battle. To appease the masses they made it so that the law does not take effect until next year. SO, was wondering, is this a popular spectator sport? Do people actually attend? Is it an advertised event? Just curious...

It is pretty popular in Louisianna and has been for many years. I guess they want it stopped because of the gambling that goes along with it and the government cannot control it and get their part out of it. I used to go when I was a kid and watch them with a good friend of mine. The cockfighters will just be more careful about who they invite to a fight. I think in a way it is bad, because the chickens will eventually become extinct and they are very pretty.

It is VERY popular in S. LA. So much so that some small towns are worried about the loss of income from the game clubs. People who fight roosters round here treat their chickens better than any other kind of animals. At least the roosters have a fighting chance. It has been illegal in alot of larger towns for years, but the small towns allow it.

You right the gov. just wants their cut. We have casinos all over here so it is not about doing away with gambling, just not being able to regulate it. Not to mention PETA is all over it.

But yeah it is big time here. Not odd to see old men with a briefcase handcuffed to their wrist at the fights. Big money at those fights.

Not to mention it is a long standing tradition here. Kinda like if they did away with calf roping in rodeos b/c it is cruel.

a little known but interesting fact about cock fighting is that fighting chicken eggs are taken from under the hen on day 17 and kept in a refrigerator untill day 20 and then returned to the hen to be hatched..

it makes the young birds cold hearted...

But gambling is illegal and not to be found in the casinos. Only GAMING is allowed in the casinos.

Louisiana was the last state to allow cockfighting. Arizona banned it last year. I guess it is a good thing to ban it. I have never been to a cock fight and never wanted to go. It has been a part of the Cajun culture for many years in some areas.

Yes, they do. 2 roosters go in the ring and only one comes out alive and sometimes he even dies, but there has been occasions I am sure when they both come out alive at least back in the old days when they only used gaffs. I have never been to a knife cockfight. I don't think I would like those to well myself. To me it is just the luck of the draw and not the talent of the rooster. If you do not know what that is that is razors on their spurs and yes they are sharp. I guess if you go into a fight like that if you do win it has to be talent though of some sort.

Yeah, they fight to death just running out on the farm. I don't fight games but I have several different types of them and it's not uncommon for them to fight and kill each other as young birds. They are very beautiful birds. The roosters are just naturally very agressive toward one another and the hens are excellent mothers. They will fight any thing to protect their chicks.

how horridly barbaric, it is almost as bad a bare knuckle fighting, but at least with that the men are in there own minds to do it. The poor Roosters are made to (breed to). It has been banned here for years, and also dog fighting, pit bulls are a licenced dog and have to kept on a lead and muzzled, I can't see what pleasure there can be in watching something tear each other apart. just IMO anyway.

Pretty tame in all honesty - I cannot agree with your comments - but we are all products of our environment. You judge by your laws and you upbringing. Others by theirs.

In your world rodeos would be banned. In ours they are quite common.

Is the use of a whip or a cane on a human cruel punishment? It is still practised in many parts of the world.

I believe your answer may prove my point.

Very well put Bez

Get em Ryder

I don't think it's legal here in Texas, but there is still plenty of it going on. Most of these small rural towns have at least one going on every weekend.

I did say it was just my opinion, I realize each to his own, and we have different values by being brought up in different Countries. If the flogging is for a reason such as rape, child molesting, or murder and it is without a dought it was that person then no I would not be against it. as I do believe in hanging for such crimes should be bought back to this Country. Saves us Tax payers a lot of money and gets the scum off of the earth. bet that has suprised you auh!

If it were used here I think it would do a lot of good.

Hear, hear! You remember the American kid several years back that was caned in Singapore (I think) for spray painting those cars? As Bill Engval said, "I guarantee he won't spray paint no more cars. Betcha' he don't even join art class!"
