As for Tide Pods, and condoms up the nose, how many of these incidents have actually happened? Seriously, I'd love some proof of how many people have actually done this. Until then, it's a Fox News conspiracy to generate clicks. And, before everyone gets too excited, think back about all the stupid stuff you did as a kid. Driving at 100 down a dark, back road-drunk, sober, unbuckled, whatever-is just as dangerous to you AND others. At least the alleged Tide Pod kids are only hurting themselves.

I looked it up for my post above. 53 cases of "intentional" misuse last year. Most cases of Tide Pod-related calls to Poison Control were accidents: infants getting in them, or (gulp) senior citizens with dementia! So, in other words, we have more problems with senile old people eating them than teens. (Where's that hiding-under-chair emoji when I need it)

Ok, so as best I can track this thread so far, many CTers (who pride themselves on being upright moral people, many Christians) have no.problem.whatsoever with a grown man (who hosts a nightly tv show on ABC in St. Louis) using the public airways to brag that he is going to "ram a hot poker up the [ ]" of a high school student, who has dared to state opinions that the "grown" man disagrees with.
Got it.
(ps--there are 20-something million US teens. There were 53 known "Tide Pod" cases last year. (It's become more an internet-meme thing than an actual thing). Dismissing an entire generation based on the acts of an infinitesimal few would set a standard none of us "adult" generations could stand up to. There will be a few "Tide Pod" eaters in every generation).

I disagree with the way the man presented it, but I think it's been blown a bit out of proportion. We are living in a culture where reporters are expected to also be newsmakers.

I always assume these things are exaggerated.

I did some reading. It became a concern his sponsors had. It is a volatile issue. He was not very disciplined to let those words slip out.

These guys today are to news, what Howard Stern was to disc jockey morning shows in the 80s and 90s. Extreme, shock, and most importantly, generate listeners. It works too. I agree with Luke. They hire these guys to be controversial, then fire them when they are just that. Makes little sense. However this has been going on for 30 years or more now and unfortunately the boundaries are being degraded. Familiarity breeds contempt. Desensitization. Metaphor or not, we live in a world in which anything you say or do is subject to relativism. I don't like it, but as a professional in the public eye, one must be cognizant of this reality and behave accordingly.

Now, the bigger issue that concerns me: a generation of Americans exists that is now willing and actively pursuing the option of trading their 2nd Amendment rights for safety and security. That scares the shyt out of me honestly. They will get it done also. If you aren't familiar with the Tytler cycle, check it out. We are almost full circle...

Instead of berating and alienating the other side, engage in a worthwhile conversation. It's just not possible to come up with an agreeable solution to their problems, if you don't know what they are.

I agree. I think in five years their influence will produce gun control legislation. I don't think they are alienated yet but given the extremes that divide Americans on this issue, they will be.

This is where I think the country fractures from the far lefties.
It is happening in Ca. now. Unless something radically changes in the hard lines drawn in our political environment.
Sooner or later this divide will be paid for in blood one way or the other IMO.

The pendulum has swung. Yes, Sir. Not just on gun control. Demographics are going to change. I saw it and lived it in Denver.

I am not as concerned as you are. I take the long view. We didn't stay in the Stone Age. This too will be ancient history. I know it is selfish but it is also pragmatic - I concern myself only with what years I have left - LET THE BIG END DRAG!

Big picture, agree. I am also selfish- i am concerned about my brief appearance and the appearances of my offspring in the picture.

The extremism, on both sides, is alarming. I don't doubt civil disobedience but I doubt it will go so far as a declaration of Civil War. People on both sides will moderate their position when they taste war. Maybe that is what it needed to get both ends of the bell curve pulled back under the main body.

The left side is the most violent look at history. Be it socialism, communism or our own Democratic Party go back and look at the wars started over not being in lock step.
The side doing all the protesting is the one that has committed the most atrocities. Little ironic.

I think it's b/c there's such destitution among them that when they finally get an opportunity for "what's theirs" (not that I agree with it) that they go a bit overboard. How many revolutions end with the death of the leadership? I'm hoping that America isn't headed that way, only thing that may stave it off is the lack of motivation with the Facebook crowd.

On this particular board, civility is often mistaken as weakness.

It's easy to be a jerk when you're a keyboard warrior, but I bet that the vast majority of the people on here don't act like that in public-myself included. I'm more apt to let someone spew their big idea on something, and if I don't agree with it I move along. Here I'll call a spade a spade, so to speak.

Maybe you need to look for a board with a safe space.

LOL...Naw, I'll stick around, CB, despite your kind invite ;) "Safe" is overrated. Gotta have a little danger, right?
It's the guy in my original post who needs a safe space. He can't debate something on the merits (with a high school student, nonetheless) without resorting to saying he's going to ram his __ with a hot poker. Many would be up in arms if a gun-control-advocating adult had made the same statement about a high-school kid who was advocating 2nd amendment rights. I just don't like hypocrisy, I guess. I respect the posters here who disagree with the high school student's message but have nonetheless said the guy attacking him went too far.

Agree with bball that civility is all-too-often mistaken for weakness. To me it can be a sign of self-discipline and willpower. It takes zero self-control to pop off willy-nilly.
I do try to stay civil but I can hold a grudge like nobody's business. Sometimes I think "I should work on that." Then I think, naw. lol

I think people take figurative speech far too literally and get too butthurt about little crap too much.. Was what he said a little far, well, perhaps.. but everyone jumping and calling on the advertisers to pull the show is a little over the top too.
