choosing a breed

Help Support CattleToday:

make it simple , If you are not going to get in the purebred business . I would get herd of black ( angus)or black W/face cows and run a black Limousin bull on them . You will not get a better calf anywhere. They will be black and will consistantly outperform most straight angus calves. The limi bull can offer calving ease as well. What most folks dont realize is the last thing they need in with a pen of straight bred grade angus cows is an angus bull . Take advantage of the cross breed hybrid vigor and heterosis.

fitz and polledbull are right on use a continental on those black/bwf cows, great mother cows. the black sim/limo/char will give you hybrid vigor and great performance. you can get calving ease with most breeds if you tell the breeder what you are looking for. remember most times you'll give up some performance for calving ease (most of the time). just starting out probably go with calving ease first then go from there. On our commercial herd we have black/bwf mothers also and use the black char bulls, if interested in seeing the calves go to web site and look under commercial calves.
