Chewing tires

I have several cows that have are chewing any rubber items they can find, tires, garden hoses, electrical wiring, etc. While I have noticed this for years, the chewing has markedly increased lately both in the time spent and in the number of head "chewing". They are on haygrazer and have salt and mineral blocks as well as a molasas / mineral tub. Are they just bored or am I missing something?

My guess would be bored. It's a learned thing, so each year there will be a greater number of them having "learned" to chew on stuff. We have several that will run down a plastic store bag that happens to blow through the pasture. They'll gnaw on it for hours and never really eat much. Just messin around.
