I came across this forum while doing a search looking for ways to repair a water trough crack....found one, tried something similar, it worked, so did some reading and thought it was worth making an account.

The gaps in this old water trough were big enough to see light thru. The Sika product comes out of the tube thin enough to really get deep, then I smeared a big wide layer over it after filling in the crack as much as possible. I prepped the cracks with a cordless grinder and a wire wheel and really cleaned them as deep as I could. It won't survive being moved more than likely, but it can be used where it's at for the price of a tube of sealant.

also attached pictures of a float cover I made. On another trough I replaced the float and plumbing, and went ahead and insulated the PVC lines so it'd be one less to worry about preparing for the next freeze, and within 24hrs the cows had chewed on the insulation....they can't chew on it now.

I just put 2 tpost and a 4 - 5 ft piece of cattle panel in front of the float and water faucet.

The barrel is nicely done.

That is nice. I like the barrel idea. That will probably help with freezing also.

I have seen flexseal used for sealing concrete troughs with pretty good luck, also.

We are not terribly far apart. I go to Jim Hogg, Brooks, and down in there all the time. Try to go to Mansfield as much as possible. Yall got some pretty good rain there lately?

we got 4.06" last week, but areas north of us along the coast like Portland to Rockport got 6". We got enough to make things green up, but not enough to get the area caught up. I thought about flex seal, but it's always seemed gimmicky to me and Sika has always been on the pioneering edge of industrial & concrete sealants.

I spent most of my teenage years (43 now) in Jim Hogg county (my Dad used to run the Balderas Ranch for the Vogt's up until his passing a few years back). I have a ton of cattle & pasture specific questions I wish I could ask him.

Sorry to hear that about your dad. I bet he had some stories. That is some great country.

Welcome to the board. There are not a lot of people from our area but there is a lot of knowledge.

I like the barrel as a float cover. What prevents cows from pushing it around the tank rim?

It fits pretty snug, and the way that it fits over the tank it takes a bit of force to try and push it side to side, but lifts off easily. I still need to put a t-post in the ground to secure it to though. I'm just not sure where the water line is below the ground and don't want to do more plumbing :)

That's a good idea. A lot of times we drive a tpost to tie the line off too. If we just pop a hole in the barrel to slide over the post also it would be pretty stout between going over the trough and tpost.

What if you just unscrew the larger cap on the barrel and run the tpost through that?

oks like you may get the rain yall need. They keep easing that track up in to STX little by litt
yep.... Kleberg county is greener right now than I have ever seen it in any July in my 43 years of existence. It's a thing of beauty. I collected a soil sample from what is normally a very poor forage area in a pasture and there was bermuda (more than likely common) everywhere, thriving where I've never seen it before. Took all 260lbs of me jumping on the shovel to make the initial surface breakthru, first time being fat worked in my favor. I can't wait to run a subsoiler when conditions are right.

We've also paused spraying mesquite due to rain, but I won't complain since there's grass everywhere.
