I'm certainly not as talented as our mystery poet, but reading some of his or her poems got me to thinking about one of my favorites. First heard it being recited by Mississippi (the James Caan character) in one of my favorite John Wayne films -- El Dorado. Thought that perhaps one or two of you might like it. It in fact is titled "Eldorado" and was written by Edgar Allen Poe, in 1849 I believe.

Gaily bedight,
A gallant knight,
In sunshine and in shadow,
Had journeyed long,
Singing a song,
In search of Eldorado.

But he grew old--
This knight so bold--
And o'er his heart a shadow
Fell as he found
No spot of ground
That looked like Eldorado.

And, as his strength
Failed him at length,
He met a pilgrim shadow-
"Shadow," said he,
"Where can it be--
This land of Eldorado?"

"Over the Mountains
Of the Moon,
Down the Valley of the Shadow,
Ride, boldly ride,"
The shade replied--
"If you seek for Eldorado!"

Very nice, Arnoldn, thanks. Love Edgar Allen Poe. My favorite poem is Jabberwocky.

`Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

"Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!"

He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought --
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.

And, as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!

One, two! One, two! And through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.

"And, has thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!'
He chortled in his joy.

`Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

Hey Ruby, I think Lewis Carrol was the author of the Jabberwocky poem, and when you remember that he was an opium addict it sure explains alot about his books 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' and 'Through The Looking Glass And What Alice Found There'. If I remember correctly, he wrote Jabberwocky on a dare to write a poem that consisted almost totally of nonsensical words and inserted it into one of his 'Alice' books.

Thanks for posting it. I haven't read it in years and really enjoyed reading it again.

Take care

Lets try this one.

There was a time back in the day,
When things were done the cowboy way.
The men you know from story and song,
Knew the difference between right and wrong.
The good guy had the fastest gun,
And when he showed up the deal was done.
At that time, men worked hard all day,
Instead of sitting around and expecting pay.
Back then, there were no lawsuits,
And the land wasn't full of nuts and fruits,
And a man's good word on a handshake deal,
Was better than a lawyer's seal.
And neighbors were important folk,
Because you needed them if you got into a poke.
And raising kids was a career,
And family values were held more dear,
And now I wish that things could stay,
The way they were back in the day.

Aint to bad here rained three years ago last May
Got one cuttin of hay
Sure hopes this save the day
or them cows will be mighty lean and mean by next May
D@mn the luck my dog got rattler struck
Lightin struck the outhouse and my truck blew up
If we come on hard times we'll be sure and write,
up till now we haven't been in much of a fight.

Foiled by Macon's upgrades. Oh well, I guess the secret is out now. I hope you enjoy this and I've used a bit of artistic license so I hope nobody is offended.

The Tale of Jake the Kid

This is a story about a kid named Jake,
And an old time Sheriff that was on the take.
The Sheriff held his town in an iron grip,
With the star on his shoulder and the pistols on his hip.
There was alot of people in that town,
Who would like to bring the Sheriff down.
There was a mysterious man known as LA4,
Who'd snarl at you if you asked him more.
And C.C. was fast but up in years,
And now was more interested in whiskeys and beers.
There was Ruby and Annie with hearts of gold,
Who kept the men warm when they came in from the cold.
And a Texan who'd fought the Sheriff before,
And years later, still was sore.
It was a hot, hot day in the blazing sun,
When Jake came to town riding a horse named Dun,
Now Jake said the horse had the spirit of a man,
That was trapped there by an old Indian,
And he said the horse just seemed to know,
Where it was that Jake needed to go.
Well, Jake came in and got off his horse,
And headed for the bar of course.
The Sheriff yelled 'I don't want no trouble, you hear?',
But Jake ignored him and ordered a beer.
And the sheriff said 'Boy, I think you're pretty rude,'
And I don't like your looks or your attitude'.
Then the Sheriff walked over and grabbed Jake by the hair,
And picked him up and tossed him from his chair.
Then Jake said 'I'm not looking for a fight.
I'll be leaving here before tonight.'
The Sheriff said 'That's not good enough.
I think you better show me your stuff.'
When Jake walked out of the saloon,
The sun in the sky said it was half past noon.
The air in the town was deathly still,
As the Sheriff stared at Jake, testing his will.
Then the Sheriff made to go for his gun,
But Jake just stood there, calmly talking to Dun.
But when the Sheriff cleared leather to his surprise,
Jake had shot him right between the eyes.
Then there rose a mighty shout,
And Jake got on his horse and rode on out.
And the tale was told of a horse named Dun,
And Jake the Kid with the fastest gun.

There once was a girl from Nantucket, oh never mind I can't say that kind of poetry here

Limericks tend to be the only poetry I can remember very well also.

I appreciate the flattery. I hope I haven't raised everyone's expectations of me too high, because alot of what I produce isn't all that good. I've got a few more kicking around, but I'm going to space them out a bit so I've got time to build some inventory.
