Does anyone know about what percentage of heifers that go thru salebarns are kept by someone for replacements as opposed to going to a feedlot? How about cows in the 4-7 yr old range? I guess it just depends but i was wondering if there were any statistics like that for a "typical" year.

No one has to report where the hfrs. are going. Only thing that I know is to study the Cattle Inventory and the Cattle on Feed reports. This could give some slight Idea. But knowing how many hfrs from the sale barns are kept for replacements it would be hard to put a finger on it.

What about cows? what percentage would you "guess" would go on to have calves as opposed to being fattened and slaughtered soon or immediately?

My guess on the cows is very few go to other producers. Our salebarn lists a code for buyers on each animal and every one I ever sold went to a local packer.
