Have some cross fencing to get done, anyone have any experience with cattle gaps? I've always ran with gates, but it's kind of a pain in the butt to open 8 gates to get where you're going. I'll build them myself, i just need to know if they work very well.

I tried the precast concrete type. They juvenile delinquents jumped across it. Mighty Mule electric gate openers work pretty well but they're $500+ per gate.

are you refering to cattle guards? a structure (bridge)usually made of pipe or concrete set in ground level?they need to be at least 6ft wide and they work great. almost every well location in western OK has one and I have three at the house

I'm not familiar with the term 'cattle gaps', but if you are referring to auto gates (cattle guards), we have had many of them and they work very well as long as they are wide enough to prevent jumping and the pits underneath are deep enough to prevent walking across. I would go with a previous poster's recommendation that they be at least 6' wide and would add (if memory serves) that the pit be 2-3' deep.

Barbed wire gates if you will, made of a couple of wood posts and barbed wire. Like Caustic said, poor mans gate.

Use em alot of places that I don't go through alot... works well, is cheap, but still has to be built well enough to not tempt cattle to test em.............I think the center posts are the key... anchor them very well to your wire. :cboy:
