All of these diseases are preventable if you utilize proper management. Any grazing bovine can contact blackleg from the soil if it is not properly vaccinated. Vaccinate all calves within the first four months of birth and give them a booster at weaning. Female bovine should be vaccinated for brucellousis before the age of eighteen months. An annual blood test to determine the status of the herd is also recommended. IBR can be prevented by treating calves prior to shipping and using gentle herding techniques to prevent undue stress. Pnuemonia can be controlled by proper diet and management, look at the cows daily to determine if they show signs of health problems. Treat them as quickly as possible if they show signs of illness.Pink eye can be controled through choices of breed type and fly control. Brahman influenced breeds are more likly not to get pink eye than say English breeds such as Hereford. Proper managemet is the key to prevention of these diseases. It cost less in the long run. Any number of deaths are too many. Unfortunitly, many cattle do get infected and will die. How many? I don't know where that number can be found or if it is known.
