We are having trouble with our diesel Case/IH 1256. It starts great, initially shifts great, but when you get out in the field if you stop (say to get out and open a gate or cut twine) getting the thing back into gear is a problem. We have checked the clutch and it is fine which I guess leaves us with the transmission brake. The tractor is partially torn apart and the manual shows the transmission brake as easily accessible and adjustable - it REALLY doesn't look that accessible in real life. Anyone have any experience adjusting these? We have been told we may have to "split the tractor" to access these parts - but the manuals don't show anything but a "removable" panel and an open access to the parts...I'd appreciate any experience anyone has!!

Dana,It has been a while, but I will try to help. If you find the rod on the side of the transmission that works the trans brake, follow it to where the adjustment clevis and pin attach to the bellcrank. Loosen the jam nut that holds the clevis and take that pin out. Have a buddy hold the clutch pedal all the way down. Move the trans brake rod until you feel the pad touch inside the transmission. Adjust the clevis so the pin will slide through the bellcrank without binding. Start there. You can go a half to no more than one turn farther if you want the brake to be more aggresive. If you go any farther it will be hard to shift OUT of gear. I believe I would start with the standard adjustment. If your brake pad is shot, they aren't that hard to replace. You have to drain the Hy-Tran out of that section, pull the plate off the bottom of the transmission and replace the brake arm that is keyed to the cross shaft. Clear as mud? I hope this helps you. Good Luck.
