Our cows love the Canadian Thissle as long as it is in the leaf stage...clean up the knapp weed too.

Ours won;t eat them at the rosette stage but like them after they;ve bolted and just begin to flower, then they eat the flowers and the stalk.

Dave, I don't mean to hijack the thread, but do all of your animals tags have names?

The grand kids provide the names...we just give them the first letter...we're a small operation and names are just as easy as numbers for us. The cows don't care either way as long as we get it straight in the herd book.
For no reason in particular we started off with the "As" this year. Have three balck heifer claves that are identical (same sire, go figure) and keep getting them mixed up, have to watch to see them nurse to remember who the mamas are.

Sounds like a plan to me! I don't name them because, in all honesty, I have trouble remembering the names - that attention span thing again, I guess.

Wow-that is a lot of Canada Thistle. Is it just that bad in spot or is it like that all over?

That CT is bad stuff. I had a patch on a road bank and spent years getting it cleaned up. My cows won't touch it. I'm impressed by yours.

Our county weed district would love to have cows like that, instead we've been having to start billing landowners with bad infestations.

This is a joke, right? Government control on weeds? Fine you if you have to many? By "we" you are part of this?

I cannot beleive anybody would let the government have this much control. Where does it stop?

We have the weed control board that patrols the county and issues notices to the offenders...will contract a spray service and bill the property if not taken care of. We have a whole book full of noxious weeds that quickly can take over a field.
Last year I cut Canadian Thissle that was two feet above my head when I was on the tractor.
The pics are in a lease that is in the third year so we should have the thissle seeded out in two years.....now if I can get the cows to eat the toadflax we'll be doing something. DMc

Canada thistle is a big problem in our peat pastures-it usually gets started in an old ground fire spot and then spreads. Total rest-entire season-really sets it back as the grass will compete. I found out that by accident when we couldn't use one pasture for a year due to the dugouts drying up. The oldtimers up here say if you cut the heads off during a rain it will die-horses go crazy for it-there's something behind the saying 'happy as a horse eating thistles'.

A joke?, no not really, here in Oregon even if we vote something down or vote something in the government will just do what they want and not put it to a vote..... like measure 37, land use laws, and gay benefit rights.... the only joke is our government.

I spray canadian thistle with Curtail, now (knock on wood) I just have to run around and spot spray a couple times a year. Unlike Bull Thistle, Canadian Thistle will spread via the root system. So cutting the heads off don't do it.

Wyoming has certain weeds that they have deemed to be noxious - Canadian Thistle is on that list, along with bindweed, I think milkweed is on the list, and a few others. If a landowner is not controlling those weeds, the county can(and will), come in and spray for it and send the landowner the bill.

Bindweed? You must not have any hogs in your area.

No, we don't raise hogs. Statewide, it tends to be cattle, crops, and hay. Come to think of it, I can't even remember the last time I saw a hog around here or in the southeast part of the state.

Toadflax??? If it's the same as here, why is it bad? Here it's 'bout a foot tall fleshey spike with pretty bell-shaped flowers that smell good...What is it there??

While I was cutting some brush yesterday I had a humorous thought ( to me anyway) . Like, how do I know these are "real Cows" and not some highly paid actor cows like on tv?
Then I thought the next thing you know Missy will be in rehab like Brittney Spears or going to jail with Paris.
My daughters boyfriend says I have a warped sense of humour....
