No, I am not betting the theories are wrong, they may prove out. But I am not betting they are right either. There are too many unanswered questions and too many things that do not jive with the dominant theories.

Maybe time will tell, but until then, we (members of the beef industry) are much better served by keeping in mind that all of this is unproven theory with some very questionable connections.

Here is an analogy for you:

The dominant theories about red meat being connected to heart disease and cancer were promoted even stronger than the BSE-vCJD theories. Those theories were very wrong.

OK, I guess I'm missing something. What is the other theory for how this all happened.

Not just one alternate theory.......

There are just too many "holes" in the standard..........people get sick by eating bad cows who ate mad cows........theory......

Why do vegetarians die of vCJD? Why is BSE still showing up in the UK? Why would it show up in Canada? Why were the officials wrong about how many would die from it? Why do certain bovine contract it while others fed the exact same feed don't?

CFIA has now received negative results on 1700 tests. There still has only been 1 positive test animal found with BSE. It is beginning to look like perhaps a spontaneous case in the original animal all the time.

An international review team will soon begin assessing actions taken by Canada and make recommendations based on their findings.

Feeding Animal derived feed products to other animals is how BSE is spread, not grain products or ionophores (meds added to feed to improve gain and reduce illness. BSE has been in Canada for ovewr 20 plus years, and it has been in the US too. My meat sience lab teacher's dad was a vet from Washington, who worked on a research project and was exposed to brain tisue, and contracted the illness in the human form. There is no other way to test for a positive animal other than to extract brain tissue, and we don't have the means to pull brain tissue at this time with out hurting the animal. Find a test or method that could do that and you will make a lot of money. Spongeoforms (SP), are nearly impossible to distroy, thus cooking to pasturisation temp is false, it may kill a few but not all, and feeding cooked pork products etc. is part of the problem in GB, feeding hogs slop that contains cooked or scrapped animal products. We have switched to Soy oil for fat instead of using animal derived fat sources and wont even consider chicken derived protein sources. If everyone made a logical effort we could nip this problem in the but, and stop it cold.

Purdey, the guy who thinks it is all caused by organaphosphates might have been on to something. I tried reading his stuff with an open mind until I read his own website. He claims that mammals, who are subjected to organaphosphates must also be subject to "infrasonic shockwaves", such as from passing planes.

I don't know if the addition of the sound factor is in response to someone disproving his theory, but it is not commonly mentioned in the media accounts of his theory. I'm not a scientist, but his theory that infrasonic shockwaves make prions form, rather than "conducting the vital life force energies of incoming ultraviolet, acoustic and geomagnetic radiation" sounds just a bit too new age for me.

He should have just stuck with the chemical factor, but I suppose it must have been faulty in some way by itself. He also wants to blame these chemicals for all kinds of things....usually a clue that it's a hard sell.

I started reading the second link you posted, but quit when the author claimed that cows just love to eat each other's afterbirths. I don't have a million cows, but I've never seen one of mine do this. Have you?
