Klein issues dire border prediction

Premier Ralph Klein says it could be two years before the U-S border opens to Canadian cattle.

Klein made the statement in Calgary Friday.

The border closed to Canadian cattle and beef in May, 2003.

It has since reopened to some cuts of beef but cattle is still banned.

A move by the U-S government to allow Canadian cattle imports was blocked by a group of American cattle ranchers.

With the matter in the courts, Klein says a speedy resolution isn't likely.

Alberta beef producers say they have contingency plans in place and have prepared for a long closure.

frenchie- I didn't mean it as a noserubbing, but it definitely is an important issue for US producers making marketing decisions... I had a nearby neighbor sell on Superior Friday- 630 wt steers at $130.75--or $824 per calf for Nov 1 delivery....Some of the coffee shop guys were joking that that was too little- they were holding out for $1.50 at 650 wt...Was a joke the other day- but now if the border is still closed this fall - and closed to all Canadian beef- we could see it be true......
