calving

Help Support CattleToday:

Depend on the cow should have already had a few. Do you no if she has ever had problems calving?? If she has never had any problems i wouldn't worry about her. But she is a cow, if it can happen it will sooner or later.

Most of the time if an older experienced cow hs calving problems it has to do with malpresentation or malnuritment

We had a 7yr old Shorthorn cow paralayzed calving a couple of years ago, the calf was BIG and It must have come wrong. She had had it when we found her but she was cripled for over a week after.

That coarse shouldered, palletheaded SOB did that to more than one cow.

But he sure was a masculine lookin fella. Really looked like a bull as they say.

what are the odds of a cow havin trouble calving that is 4 to 6 yrsw of age not a heifer and is geting fed every once in a while

Odds should be small. If they cannot have a 90 pound calf at that age with no problem they should be culled out of the herd. What was the birthweight of the bull and of the cow out of curiosity?

Well, I tend to answer this question by saying there is a 50% chance - she either will or she won't. In reality, however, the odds of her having problems are much smaller because she is an older, experienced cow who has done this before. If her nutrition is not what it should be, or the calf is malpresented then all bets are off - malpresentation knows no age limits. It is always a good idea to watch your animals during calving season - hope for the best, but be prepared for the worst. ;-)
