Calving Season on the Ranch

Well we have started calving season on the ranch here in North Central Kansas. Bought our bull last May 11th at the Gardiner Angus sale and had him delivered to the girls on the 13th. Had 11 cows with calves on the side and another 10 that were still carrying calves when he went in. So far we had a calf on the 27th and the second one today. Not to bad for getting in there and getting to work. Both calves are heifers and were 73 and 76 pounds. Have several more that are showing signs of getting ready of having calves soon and the one we were sure was going to drop her calf this weekend and kept checking on is probably going to be the last now that we have jinxed ourselves. Jus glad they waited till after that extreme cold to start dropping them. We did lose one calf out of a first timer during the cold. never found the calf just the mom with afterbirth hanging. Yotes are so bad out here if you don't find it immediately you never will. So not sure if it was still born or froze or what happened.

Well got off work early today and was able to watch the cow we jad been keeping an eye on have her calf wasnt able to get to close but got a video of it. Pulled up to tje pasture and she was off a ways from the herd so went to check and she was close she circled the herd and hod in a gully for a bit next view of hee had the sack hanging out. She was kinda grazing and moving around so backed off and waited about 20 minutes till she settled down the was able to watch her from a distance and video the birth.

seems to always add a little bit of excitement to farming/ranching when calving season starts. looks like you are off to a good start. cows look to be in good body condition. good luck with the rest of the season.

Congrats! It's either nail-biting &/or incredibly exciting, watching them calve. Same goes for watching that calf get up and nurse. The worst is when mama keeps moving around, turning circles. Just let it nurse, already!!!!!

Exactly he kept trying to get up and she would start licking again and knock him down. Went out a couple hours later and tagged him no issues nice and dry full tummy big stout bull calf
