Had our first calf of the season yesterday.

First calf heifer had a 67# heifer calf no assistance and had it up and sucking right away.

Question: How do you get them weighed? I'm picturing a cow calving in the pasture... do you call them up to eat and try separating them then? I want to get birthweights on the calves I have next year... can you tell me how you do it? Thanks!

We just take the scales and tagger and head to the pasture. We try to catch the calf before it is too old so that it is still a little lathargic and doesn't run. It helps if the momma is close and fairly gentle. If we do have an agressive mother we will pick them up and put them in the bed of the pickup to get them weighed and tagged.
