Calving season 2017 for me

Help Support CattleToday:

I thought I was only kidding when I said all of them will wait for bad weather than all go on the same day...rained yesterday, so all wet and muddy, had one at 1 pm, one at 5 pm, and a third one at midnight. But we got all of them inside warm and dry.

It really isn't an old wives tale is it!

Cenci's calf is coming along nicely.. had a bit of navel ill and scours but got that cleared up without delay or much stress.. I like her width, and she has a fine, calving ease kind of head

Yesterday I had the 13th calf, Hekla had a very nice heifer which will probably be a replacement.. Up and nursing in under a half hour, momma is such a nice cow to work with too, just stands there.. sure makes my life easier

Caddy and Mega are getting REALLY close now.. I wouldn't mind another bull from Caddy, and a heifer from Mega.. probably be the other way around of course

The calves are super rambunctious now.. Durga's calf "Floppy" (floppy ear, tag is a little far out) is definitely the instigator of the bunch, and loves bunting your knees, especially exciting is when you kick a little dirt at her, she just starts to beller.. Hera (Cenci's) is also getting there, she was a little shy at first but having so much fun seems to be curing her of that.. d&mn she's looking better every day too.

14th calf born last night,.. a bit of a rodeo to get it to nurse, etc, from Caddy, another heifer.. I'll see how she works out... Still waiting on Mega *sigh*

My dad came out to see the calves with me.. Floppy was all over that, running circles around us bellering and kicking up her heels.. So much fun to watch, it makes up (a little) for the aggravation you get with others

Caddy's calf is a little sluggish, saw her nursing yesterday, but not very vigorous... I'm going to see what I can do about that here now..

Meanwhile Mega had a big bull calf, backwards presentation.. needed a little pull to get things going.. Sure is nice having a docile, big cow.. lead her into the pen with a halter, and be able to use both hands to get the calving chains on... Vigorous guy, up and sucking in a hurry, momma cleaned him off well

Here he is today

Then a few minutes ago another cow just had a calf.. don't like the cow much but calf has a nice blaze face.. up and nursing right now, going to bring them in when they're done

Kama had to wait until I was all ready to go to town to have her calf... Looks really herfish, though it's only 3/16th herf.. 3/16th Saler, 1/8th SH, and 1/2 Gelbvieh
Dang was the gestation time ever long.. 302 days ties for the longest I've ever seen here... her full sister did that a couple years ago
Adds some color to the herd I guess

Nice looking calf, I may be biased though being a Hereford guy myself.
I do think they're super cute as calves, but I'm not a big fan of Herf cows.
I saw him nurse again last night, he's a HUNGRY guy, and really thick, should look good by fall time
