Need some help on this one. Never have i had any calving problems until the last 18 months. Have lost 3 cows, and saved one calf. would you figure a problem with the Bull that bred my cattle? (Beefmaster) That I canned about 7 months ago, or what could it be? Only one was a heifer, the rest were seasoned veterans on their 4th and 5th calves, when I used a Brangus, we never had any problems. I have used Beefmasters before and had never had any previous problems. Can't seem to get a logical, precise answer anywhere. Most people tend to blame the bull, including our vet. THANKS! by the way, most of our cows are Angus X's

Sounds like a bunch of "bull"..and the bull. If I lost 3 I would be steamed! :x Sorry to hear this has happend to you. The type cattle you have..are they small bodied (small/moderate)? Their hips may not have been able to handle that type cross? Look at what you're putting those animals on in the last trimester too. Lush pasture, and supplemented proteins can be deadly!

Have you lost the cows because the calves were too big? Or other problems?

If the cows were all lost because the calves were too big, I would blame the bull.

Just curious.. how did the cows die?

First off, Thanks to all of you that responded to my post!!2 of four calves were breeched, and the other two had large heads, and huge shoulders, which seemed to get them hung in the birth canal. My cattle are large frame, Angus, Charolais,Beefmaster, Hereford, Heinz 57 crosses. I've got 5 more head due to calve any day now from the Beeefmaster Bull I mentioned in my post. Had one calve yesterday, and thought she was having problems, but delivered O.K. the cows that died calving , lost them due to prolapse, after vet pulled calves, another one became paralyzed, and had to put her down. My cattle were not on lush pasyure at the time of calving, as all these mishaps have occured in Cold weather. I supplement them with sweetlix Tubs, and sweetlix minerals. Once again, thanks for all your replies to my problem.I've been visiting the boards here for quite a while, and figured it was time to join. Great to be part of a great bunch of folks!

Welcome to the board! Sorry to hear about the losses. I had a nice Charolais bull that I used on some Beefmaster cross cows with no difficulties at all-my dad needed to change bulls so he bought my bull. Used him on his herd of Beefmaster and Beefalo crosses. Lost five calves, two heifers and a cow because of the size of the calves. Had to pull seven of the calves. Most that had to be pulled were out of 5 to 7 year old, medium to large cows. It was the bull.
