Just reading an article by Dr. Roy Burris, Beef Extension Specialist.
There has has been recent discussion on the forum about how to feed heifers to prepare for calving. I think TB and others have made this point but to provide confirmation, Dr Burris recommends that cows/heifers be maintained in good condition or they are "most likely to have weak or dead calves." He also says feed cows to keep them in good body condition or they will be a poor source of colostrum.
He says replacement heifers should be gaining adequately during gestation to meet target weights. Recommends adjusting the feeding program to ensure it is adequate.
Nothing in his article suggests under-feeding.
