Calving 2023

Help Support CattleToday:

Two more bull calves born today sired by the lim bull. One 281 days gestation, second 288 days gestation.

A couple more cows are real close and one heifer could be just hours away from calving. Currently 3/4 of calves are bulls.
Odd how that works out, more bull or heifer calves either way. Had almost all heifer calves for 2022, nice to have the money from selling steer calves but decided to keep all my heifers to try to improve genetics.

Getting closer to calving season end. Have only 17 to calve, 8 from them are heifers. Had one newborn yesterday and one today. Both by the lim bull, bull and heifer. Several others are getting real close too.

There should be some nice heifers at the weaning. One of the current favorites:

Charolais sired heifer, one month old. Seem to grow real well and from a very good dam, so a bright future should be ahead of this girl.

I almost ask if you castrate the bulls when born and then remembered that you never castrate or dehorn.
I love how big the calves are. The white calf would be heavily discounted here and very few woukd keep her because of her being white. Very sad its that way.

We could learn a thing or two from breeders (and people) in Europe... is we weren't so damn delusional.

Belgium has probably the best understanding of livestock genetics in the world.

Isnt it something that her calves grow well and can be any color and it seems still sell good. Definitely more pounds to sell.

Weanling buyers don't want angus or angus cross calves or atleast they get a much lower price. Black coloured calves of any other breed also aren't that wanted.

This heifer had her first calf Sunday ad bull calf ..

Had the first victim to the ravens yesterday. Found 6 days old heifer with bloody back end and barely alive. But it meant that there is a free adoptive mom for a calf in need. Skinned the dead calf and introduced the new calf to the cow. She was really suspicious, was very hesitant to let the calf nurse at first, but motherly instincts won. In the evening saw both walking together. Cow had an empty udder and the calf was in a very good mood.

Congrats on a successful and quick graft.
