I have been fostering calves and a new one I have had for three weeks has a raspy cough when it runs in to feed. It also looks lathargic around the paddock.

Can anyone tell me what the treatment is if any????

First, get a temp on him. If he has a temp. maybe Nuflor or one of the pneumonia type of antibiotics. If no temp it's hard to tell.

It doesn't do any good to vaccinate a sick calf. Get him over whatever is the lung problem then vaccinating for al the normal stuff for your area would be appropriate. Check the temps on all the calves, any with temps should get antibiotics also. If he doesn;t have a temp I would seriously consider getting rid of him before giving him anything. He could have had pneumonia or some other luncg problem and just have so much damage to his lungs that he;ll never really do well. The only time we ever give antibiotics without a temperature is when bringing in bottle calves from ther salebarn. They routinely get a shot of Nuflor as the come off the trailer. Other then that, no temp no drugs.
