Have any of you guys or gals tried these. I am talking of the plastic ones that go in the nose and are to not allow suckling.

i have tried them and they work as long as you can keep it in the nose... the one i had would fall out every so often..

there could be better ones out there than what i had.. it had a bolt that you hand tightened to adjust for the size of the calf's nose... i guess it would work loose.

Calf Weaners?.........Stick to the Fry's!

Have one plastic yellow one that came with a calf (does that sound right?)

The man I got the calf from uses them and has good luck with them. There are studies about weight loss in calves at weaning related to stress of being seperated, and they recommend this type of device, or at least keeping the calves in a pen or pasture next to the momas. Significant reduction in weight loss at weaning was accomplished as compared to complete seperation.

we wean in adjacent pastures and by the moon to reduce stress. Haven't used the "plastic weaners" but sometimes think of them for the foals. If you think cows are bad to take them back post-weaning, you should have seen this sorrel mare we had! Mother-hood was her udder existance!

Fellersbarnone,
Under what sign of the moon do you wean your calves?

I ordered five for a trial run. I got mine from Valley Vet. I have used the moon phases befor. The only time I lost a calf from a knife cut was when the signs were supposedly right.

The dairyman down the street puts bull rings in his heifers that try to nurse other heifers in the lot. He said it made them stop trying to nurse. Also better retention then the plastic things. He takes them out on their 1st freshining.

Cowgal, thanks for that website~!!

Scotty--Did you request a sample, or did Valley Vet automatically send you 5 when you were questioning the effectiveness of the item ?

Which ones did you get ?
