A cattleman told me that a person had to wait 45 days after vaccinating a calf before he sold it at a salebarn. Is that true?

Check the label on the vaccine. Most have a 21-30 day withdrawal period. Whatever it says is however long you have to wait.

The withdrawal period is only for slaughter. It can be sold as return to farm, correct?

Yep. If you're not going to butcher the animal, the withdrawal time isn't an issue. For that matter, if you're just discussing a 600lb calf that's going through the auction and, say, headed to a feedlot, the animal isn't going to be butchered for several months yet so again withdrawal time isn't even a consideration.

BTW, vaccinations and antibiotics aren't the only things with a withdrawal time. Ivomec carries a 35 day withdrawal and C&D Antitoxin carries a 21 day withdrawal.
