I can't make sense of it
Very similar cattle, both weaned and a round of shots
Nearly 300# difference and only 40.00 price difference

Defies all logic. I've been wondering the same thing. It also ruins you from holding calves you already own.

Sure does not. They really seem to discount for anything possible at all now. took a beating on a 5 weight steer this week, they thought he was short but was just the same as a is mate heifer. I think they docked him because he looked bully, he was castrated late as I was trying to see if he might be a good bull, and yes I can count to 2. They called him a bull when he got weighed and had to correct them. Glad I sold my weaned heifers off the farm.

Nothing new on the docking. They seem to dock for just about anything when prices are falling and not dock for much of anything when they are rising.

As BF said it defies logic
You can buy 300# more for the same money, you cog is nearly zero
Based on the futures I don't see a way to lock in a profit
Makes me curious as to what they know

Futures have been crawfishing for a while now. I say I'm going to quit looking, and take my blind hog treatment and go on. I still check several times a day though. No market here for fats at all. Wish I had bought heifers, I'd just breed them.

As much as it hurts to admit, the price is still good for the cow calf guy. I've sold calves for a $1.00 less per pound than what I got today. The only thing keeping us going is the price of fuel. If fuel gets back to $4.00+ a gallon after the election, we're done.

This is an from a price article last week. Sure aint seeing these prices in georgia!!

Good demand was noted in Bassett, NE on Wednesday selling over 4400 head, as many reputation Sandhill cattle were on offer with over 450 head of steer calves weighing 600-650 lbs averaging 612 lbs sold for a weighted average price of 203.39; 265 head of their bigger brothers weighing between 900-950 lbs averaging 931 lbs sold for a weighted average price of 169.98.

6 weight cattle have to be done something with pretty soon. They are 2 way cattle, can be put on feed or grazed a little longer. They are closer to the current price decline, more of a gamble.
4 weight cattle offer the buyer some time to play the market and see how/if prices recover down the road.
Right now a buyer can contract weight at 50 cents per lb. The 6 weight steer is only worth the extra 50 cents per lb. it will cost him to get the 4 weight calf to that size.
Most stockers want to put the weight on the calf now days. They will grow it quicker than most of us and chances are it will grade better when finished.
I am happy selling 4 weight calves and letting someone else take the risks from there.

These are some prices from my local sale barn on Tuesday. I only recorded healthy number one calves. Nothing too fleshy. The 4 weights average more total dollars than the 5&6 weights. Is this bc the buyers have more time as Tim said and they are speculating that the market will turn around by the time they are ready to market them?

The 4wt calves at the sale at Apache Ok today were softer
Good black calves, weaned and vac' s were around 2.00 more or less.
Lesser quality down around 1.80
More in line with the current market
Futures were green for the first time in a few days.
Lots of uncertainty in the market
Paper cowboys are all over the place from one day to the next.

Lots of information or maybe misinformation being broadcasted

This deal is going hurt some folks if it doesn't turn around
