Did you use a red factor char bull? My last bull was replaced by my breeder for throwing some roans that looked like that. I've owned several char bulls and never got roans or reds just diluted color (tans/silvers) before that particular bloodline. Mine wasn't supposed to be red factor but there was something in his background.

I'm the original poster, but used to raise Charolais. I have seen quite a range in colors and markings on Char cross calves.

I've seen it too but I have bulls that never do anything but dilute the color of the dam. When my breeder took the bull I bought and gave me another he was quite sure off this other line I won't see the roans etc. I only use Charolais bulls except on heifers last 4 years. Tans and silvers off my blacks and reds. Idk if it's a breeding up thing or what?

It could be a breeding up thing, and then when bred to commercial cows lots of things can come to the surface. When I had registered Charolais, I would occasionally have calves born that had Hereford markings but the with a real light red tinge, but the red tinge would disappear within a couple of weeks> I later found out that those particular Charolais cows were bred up from Herefords. I did have a couple red factored calves born that stayed reddish. On commercial cows I have seen the typical tans and mouse colored calves, as well as some those colors but with longhorn markings and some with spotting.

To be honest I don't have a lot of information on the bull. I had a buddy of mine who does a lot of AI and embryo transfers find me something he thought would be both effective and economical so he got some straws from a breeder in South Texas. It was my second time AI'ing, first time was a struggle, so I didn't want to get too wrapped up in what I was putting in since I wasn't sure how I would do. Next time around I'll be more proactive in the semen shopping.
