calf is eating dirt

Help Support CattleToday:

Does it have loose mineral available free choice?

Is it really eating dirt or is it in a dry lot and bored?

Wish I could get my cows to eat dirt.

All they eat is grass and feed. Dirt would be much cheaper!

Calves eat dirt, also twigs, bark, twine, old pieces of anything they can find, etc. Unless they're making a banquet out of it I wouldn;t pay them any mind

I had the same thought Mike.

Then I thought, at more than $10,000 an acre, dirt's not all that cheap.

Calves & Foals eating "dirt":

"Babies" check out stuff by tasting (2 and 4 legged). Otherwise, mineral deficiency, hay or feed in adult's manure, boredom, practicing grazing...who knows for sure?

Mine like to eat hay twine. Cow flop with 4 feet of baling string in it just don't look right, orange cow flop anyone? (smirk)

It could also mean that the calf has a belly ache and is trying to soothe its stomach. That is a theory that I have heard. Mostly though I think it is boredom, or curiosity.
