i have a 350# calf that was castrated about 3 weeks ago by a man who has done it many times, so i think he knew how... but now this calf's sac is swollen, he walks slow and is obviously not well...

my thought was to recut the sac, and drain it, spray him down and give him some penicillin... but the sac is hard with no puss drainage... just swollen

never ran into this before... some insight from some of you would be most appreciated..

thanks

i had a calf that was banded three weeks ago that weighed 500 and died from tetnus monday.my vet suggested for bigger calves give them a tetnus shot three weeks before banding when using a large bander. i band mine when they are a week old i bought this from someone who has been using this technique for 4 years and never saw this before. i would suggest a shot of antibiotics and a tetnus shot. call your vet too.

The swelling is common. Imagine if someone did that to you. It should subside in a matter of weeks.

no, what is happening to this calf is not common.... was finally able to talk to my vet... he said the guy who castrated him left some of the cord(s) in there and for me to get everything i could out of the sac...and give him a good shot of penicillin... he said i would find the cord in there too and to get it out...

hope this works..

Good luck!

well, after going back in... it was not what my vet thought.... his sac was full of big clumps of clotted blood, with no infection... has anyone out there ran into this?

we squeezed out a big double hand full of this stuff... this guy must be hemoraging he is also swollen up in his sheath and left side a little... that may be infection .. i dont know... vet said to give him penicillin daily and watch him a couple of days...

any other help is appreciated..

thanks

Yes have seen it in cattle and horses. He did not move around much and the cut closed up and did not allow any drainage. Your vet got you on right track. Should be fine in a day or two. If you can wash with water hose will help with swelling and drainage if he is in lot. If not make him run with horse, truck, 4-wheeler etc this will help keep him open and draining. Good luck.
