Calf died - why?

Went out to feed this morning and found a heffer calf dead. Hadn't been dead long, was still warm and soft. Looks like she was eating and dropped in the food. She's a angus herford cross, about 300 lbs. We had bought her from a friend of ours, good breeder. On examination we didn't find any obvious signs, had been eating well and acting normal. Her stomach was full. We did notice her heart was different. On one side the muscle was thin, and the heart was full of clotting. Was this a birth defect, or could one of the bigger cattle caused some damage [internal]? I've seen her get slammed pretty hard from some older cows and steers. I hate loosing animals, especially if I don't know why. Thanks for the help.
