looking for a calf catcher to snag calf leg for tagging..catching..etc....not for side by side, just hand held to ease up and catch back leg...researched on amazon, valley vet, etc..love to have some real world reviews..thanks for any info

B has one lashed with bungee cords to the top of his Jeep Cherokee which is his calving rig. Every time a calf escapes him he grumbles that 10 years ago he would have caught that calf. Then he takes down his hook and catches the calf. It can also be turned around and used to smack a cow on the nose when needed.

I've got one. A plastic one from valley vet. I've gotten pretty good at using it out the truck window. I saw somewhere had one that collapsed down to 5' that would store inside the cab, then push a button and it extends to 10'. That'll be my next one.

I've got an aluminum one that I ordered from Jeffers. It extends to probably 10 ft.
It's handy to catch with. Have to be fairly quick with it if the calf is very fast. Also used it recently for a non calf situation the other day. Had some tin blown and bent over on a storage building. Used it to reach and pull the piece of tin back into place so I could nail it back.

The extendable ones don't last long if you have many rank cows….. 😂😂 Someone may have told me that….

Get 7 or 8 feet of 1/2 inch round aluminum rod and make your own. Way cheaper.
You bend your own hook into it? Cold form it or heat it? Never worked with aluminum before.

I think one brand of them is called Dr Hook. They are also usefull to put in the mouth of a grown calf to help keep it occupied/restrained while freeze branding.
