They are. That's what I've always known as mud cats. I haven't tried one, but apparently the meat tastes like mud.
I thought pollywogs were tadpoles?

Yep, as long as the younguns don't step on them the next few days. Here we call them a Flathead or Appaloosa catfish. Mud cats usually have a big head and little body, best place for them is on the pool bank.

I spent a little time on the snake river when I visited the Potlatch paper mill in Lewiston in the late 70's. If I remember correctly, there are or were some giant sturgeon in that river. For a while I went down to the Snake River catching catfish with some friends. The wife declared our house a catfish free zone. I didn't mind much. Years of living on the WA coast and in SE Alaska I was use to eating fish that are much better. But they were kind of fun to catch.

Yes there are but you are not allowed to keep them. Up until a few years ago there was season for them on the lower Columbia but they closed that now too. Down there they had to be at least 48 inches but no more than 60 inches. All others were released.I spent a little time on the snake river when I visited the Potlatch paper mill in Lewiston in the late 70's.
