Buying and feeding calves

Help Support CattleToday:

This was my plan. I was going to put the word out and get on FB pages and offer to buy calves straight off the farm in a little radious of us. I thought a lot of smaller producers would like not having to haul them and saving on commission. That could be hundreds of dollars. No luck so far. Too many people would rather hook their trailer up to their F250, put on their hat, and drive to town to with 5 calves.

I don't really blame them because they didn't really understand and my system for weighing them was kind of rough. I offered a couple people very good prices just trying to get some momentum. They missed out as it was in their favor a lot more than ours.
Neighbors …….. I offered to buy a load of calves from a neighbor who has now moved on a few years ago. Priced the calves, I pay the truck, weighed off truck at the feedlot that was custom feeding a bunch for us then. I pay brand inspection etc. He turned it down.
Hauled calves to sale barn a day early, let them shrink and paid all the expenses. I chased every bunch they sorted and put through the ring and bought 30 of the 120 he shipped. Did some calculations after and figured he realized about 7 cents less on the load from what I had offered.

But I was trying to screw him……

Two years later he was in a bind and needed to sell with no sales near in early January. Told him he thought I was a crook before and wasn't interested in him painting me with the same brush again
