I found this article interesting since I participate in a group that does the same thing. How many of small producers on here comingle there cattle to offer a more consistant group?

We are involved with a co-op that markets around 1500 head a year, about half are spring calves the other fall calves. They are comingled and sorted then fed at a backgrounder to about 700 lbs then marketed. We normally get 3-5 solid bids on each group and it can be a real challenge to decide which company we will sell them to. Part of the requirements is that the buyer has to provide carcass data at slaughter. The carcass data has helped to improve the consistancy of the animals which has also increased the price we get for them. Kind of a win, win deal.
