How many cows can a bull cover without having them calve to far apart?

We have 26 cows and 14 heifers, will one bull do or should we get a seperate bull for the heifers or get two bulls and run them all together?

Too far apart is a subjective term. 45 days 60 days 90 days?

Provided that nutrition is at proper levels, and the cows/heifers are cycling, a well grown out 2 year old bull would handle them all. Not just any 2 year old. In some areas I have seen 3 year olds not ready for that kind of work.

The bull you want breeding your heifers, will he have enough growth to make your cows profitable? Number one on heifers is to get a live calf, your cows need to have some extra performance, unless the easy calving bull is very good for growth as well. (Read more expensive).

If you are unsure, ask a well established breeder that will spend the time helping you decide. Likely you will be safer buying 2 bulls.

Jay,

I bought a purbred Angus bull at 14 months age (VERY expensive!) put him in with 24 crossbred cows. Have had 24 calves 11 months later......get what you pay for?
