We are doing something we haven't done for several years, and that is to put some young bulls into the Florida Bull Test. It will be interesting to see how they do; I don't have any expectations of winning the test. We don't breed for high growth; we strive for more of a balance. We have also figured out that a good commercial cattleman is going to be looking to improve his herd. He has figured out the same as I have that you can't select for just one trait or it will eventually bite you in the butt. Anyway, we delivered three bulls to the test on July 26th they put them on a three week warm up then get the start of test weight. At delivery the average weight of all bulls was 780 lbs. From arrival date to initiation of the test the bulls gained 3.67 lbs/day and now average 857 lbs. The next weight will be taken on September 14th or at 28 days. Our bulls did the following:
976 – Tattoo #1023 arrival weight 810 lbs start weight 916 for a ADG since arrival of 5.05 ADG
975 – Tattoo #1002 arrival weight 768 start weight 858 for a ADG since arrival of 4.29 ADG
974 – Tattoo #1013 arrival weight 746 start weight 824 for a ADG since arrival of 3.71
The 1002 & 1023 calves are out of our senior herd sire Coleman EXT 6149, we wanted to get some feed efficiency information on his calves. The 1013 calf is out of a cow family that we really like and again wanted more data on this cow family.
