Bull or Steer

Help Support CattleToday:

I see you are in East Texas. If you are taking the calf to the sale barn, it depends on what weight you intend to sell. If you are selling under 400 lbs, it really does not matter. If over 500 lbs it makes a $5 to $13 per cwt. discount for being a bull in the late summer and fall.

If you are raising feeders, steers are much better. Would you be raising the bulls to sell as feeders or breeders. Depending on how they are bred, bulls can be hard to sell for breeders also depending on your region. You have more options with steers depending on your operation. You can sell weaned feeders at auction, weaned feeders privately, finished steers at auction, finished steers privately, or have the steers butchered and sell/keep the meat. You have more options with steers.
