BSE and selling cattle

Hi I am new here and was wondering we have several calves to sell and usually sell at the 1st sale of the year, has anyone heard how the market is being affected? We usually sell in the Texas sales.

I don't believe anyone here can answer your question. IF they prove the cow was from Canada, IF a US cow doesn't turn up with BSE by the first of the year, then the markets might not be affected. Are you selling registered stock or commercial? Lots of things can happen between now and January 1, 2004. Good luck to us all....

Haven't any news on stockers, but there was a slaughter cow sale today at the local sale barn (Florida) and cows were down only 1-2/cwt. The barn manager expected a slight dip in stockers next week, but nothing very noticeable. He could be wrong, but I trust him, unless some shocking new revelation comes out between now and then.

Vintage Livestock Auction for Monday December 29, 2003

Compared to last Tuesday, slaughter steers sold 18.00-20.00 lower in the wake of the BSE discovery last Tuesday. There was a good crowd on hand on Monday, in fact there were about as many people as there were steers as only around 80 head went on the books. Who could blame producers for wanting to see how their market was going to react, after all it has been a while since the bulk of the prices have been in the 71.00-75.00 range; and many have become accustomed to the 90.00-100.00 prices. There were not enough slaughter Holsteins or heifers to test the market. Slaughter cows sold mostly 5.00 lower on a light test. There were very few slaughter bulls on offer. The slaughter supply included 81 steers, 5 heifers, 6 bulls, and 50 cows.

Note: The feeder cattle sale that was scheduled for next Monday (January 5th) is cancelled until further notice.

Slaughter Steers: Three head high Choice and Prime 2-4 1285-1410 lbs 81.00- 83.00. Choice 2-3 1200-1485 lbs 74.00-78.00, mostly 74.00-75.50, one heavy 1550 lbs 74.50, few Charolais-crosses 80.00-82.00. Few Choice 4 1240-1280 lbs 69.00-73.50. Few Choice 1-2 1200-1335 lbs 80.50-82.50. High Select and low Choice 2-3 1135-1435 lbs 71.00-75.00. Select 1-2 1120-1460 lbs 69.00-73.50, couple high yielding 72.50-76.00.

Holstein Steers: Few Choice 2-3 1500-1545 lbs 63.75-65.25. Few high Select and Choice 2-3 1480-1595 lbs 60.00-61.00. Few Select and Standard 1-2 1495- 1615 lbs 54.25-57.25.

Slaughter Heifers: Couple Choice 3-4 1240-1330 lbs 73.00-74.00, one 1575 lbs 72.75. Couple lightweight Select 1-2 965-1035 lbs 73.75-74.00.

Slaughter Cows:

Percent Lean Weight Bulk Low Dressing

Boning 75-80 over 1200 lbs 40.75-44.00 36.50-37.75

Lean 85-90 over 1000 lbs 37.00-40.50 29.00-34.25

Slaughter Bulls: Yield Grade 1 1420-1865 lbs 47.00-54.00, one low dressing 42.00, couple light 1005 lbs 50.00-55.00, one fancy high yielding 1520 lbs 72.00.

> usually sell in the Texas sales. i talked to two poeple tonight who attended a sale today in ne texas, they both said the 500-600 pound calves were about what they were before the BSE outbreak, the only thing down was weigh cows and they were down about 15-17 dollars a hundred.

Compared to Tuesday, slaughter cows sold mostly 5.00-7.00 lower, with sales as much as 10.00 lower at times. There were not enough slaughter bulls for a market test. The cattle supply included 279 slaughter cows, 2 slaughter bulls, 62 slaughter steers, 24 slaughter heifers, and 38 head of feeder cattle.
