I have a longhorn calf that is about 7 months old. I calf has about 7 inches of horn on each side. She broke one of her horns rite at the base. Just the out side shell broke and moved upward. The shell has come off now and the top of the horn has a growth on it. What ould be the best thing to do with this?

it will heal up from my experience with a holstien seveal years ago. she broke it and shell came off. it healed and was almost symmetrical with the other side .

You have a few of choices:

1. Cut them off to even things up

2. Grab a can of wound spray - we use "Bleu" and spray the whole thing with a good coating and let her run loose

We run horned cattle and had the same thing happen a few years ago. It is like pulling off a finger nail. The outside will eventually have a new growth of hard cover. Unfortunately the horn will always be somewhat deformed - but like M5Farms said - the horn will grow back and heal up with the traditional hard coating.

Best of luck in which ever route you decide to follow
