Broken down refers to old cows with some physical defect, likely teeth, jaw or legs. They will probably raise the calf they have in them and then should be shipped for hamburger.
Jason Trowbridge
Southern Angus Farms
Alberta Canada
In my area, these cattle are called "broken mouth". This term is used to designate cattle that are usually older and are losing or have lost most of their teeth (if not all). I agree with Jason, in that these cows will most likely raise the calf they are carrying, but they will require being fed grain or very palatable forage.
