British-Hereford, Angus, Shorthorn,Galloway, etc.
Continental-Simmenthal (and the variations), limo, Charolais, Gelbvieh, Braunvieh, etc.
American-Brangus, Santa Gertrudis, Santa Cruz, Hot Lander, and others

Literally, British breeds came from the English side of the channel, and continental came from continental Europe.
