I had 5 Limousin heifers bred for their second calves with a (neighbors)Charolais bull. I was told this was a mistake and I should have done this visa-versa.I worried all spring but they had no problems with birthing either from luck or whatever. My question is. I have four 14 month old Limousin heifers that have not been bred before and the same nice neighbor (same bull)has offered his bull again. Would this be a mistake? I've heard all sorts of problems with first time calving.

Strictly IMHO, but I'd NEVER breed virgin Limo (or any other breed) heifers to a Charolais bull --- unless I had no other viable alternative, the heifers were physically very large in the pelvic area and the bull was one with real low birth weight EPDs (and if he was older and had a sufficient breeding history so that there was a high percentage of confidence & expectation for his EPD figures). I think there's a big difference in virgin versus second calf "heifers" and I wouldn't press the luck you recently had.

I wouldn't. I run a Charolais bull with my cows and he does fine but I sure wouldn't take the chance with a heifer.

> with first time calving. dont cross these cows they are not very stable mentally when crossed take it from exp.
