In a paper presented by OSU based on 394 ranches from TX, OK and NM it is stated that in a 75 day breeding season vs year round, the cwt cost are 13.63 less and provided 45.82 more pounds of calf per cow per year.

you didn't provide a link to the paper.....wonder how they took into account that breeders w/a controlled breeding season usually (note i said usually not always, so don't pick this post apart) have better management systems in general.

I'm curious as to why you think that year round breeders usually have a better management system. Not trying to pick you apart. Just trying to understand your perspective. We recently went from year round breeding to a spring and fall calving season. Was easier to manage knowing when to look for calves and when we shouldn't have to worry.

I think he meant the opposite. I do the Spring and Fall thing too. It allows me to use less bulls to breed just as many cows, and splits the revenue to semi annually. And since we worm and vaccinate every six months, it kinda lines up. Works much better for us.

sorry, guess i wasn't clear. i said controlled breeding season (not year-round) have a better management system.

& as for the picking apart, no problem....i've just found that if you make a general statement like that, someone always has the exception.

I got it from an article in the Midwest Cattleman for March 18. It was written by Glenn Selk, OSU Extension Animal Reproduction Specialist. It was presented by OSU Agricultural Economists (Parker, et al) to the 2004 Southern Association of Agricultural Scientists.
Maybe you can find it from that
