Bred cow sales

Breds were higher than a giraffes wazoo again today. Nothing worth having under 1600. And those were old short bred cows in decent shape. Anything better was higher.

One fella was buying 7 and 8 yr olds 5 and 6 months bred at 2000 to 2050

Same here Murray. In my calculation for old cows, they are paying around $600 for a unborn calf that will not be born for two to five months. I came home with a empty trailer once again.

I'll look again on a cold day in January.

They had a bunch of cows yesterday. They started with ring loads of solid mouth cows bred to calf in February - March for $3,000 +/- one bid. Three and a half hours later they were selling them 10 or so at a time and the price had slipped to $2,800. Gummers and broken mouth cows were selling for $1,900 - $2,000. Just no desert looking cows. Fat 1,500 -1,600 cows seemed to be the order of the day. I want cows that will put on 100 pounds not ones who will lose 100 pounds when they go out to the hills. Someone asked the auctioneer how many they had left. He replied about 300. Just about them B's son came in and said it is snowing. I had 75 miles home including 2 pretty tall hills to go over to get home. I left him with a order of what to to buy and cut a trail. I am getting too old for that type of driving. The last 25 miles or so you couldn't see the lines on the pavement just two ruts all the trucks had made.

I bought three cows at the sale today. Two broken mouth, and one short term solid mouth. One I'm not sure I like her, she is a swing bag; she will probably go to the sale next fall. I guess I will see how she takes care of her calf. I averaged $1580. I ran them through the chute to brand them. Dad was going to come out to help me; I was all done and wrapping everything up by the time he started coming out the door. He had to check out what I bought so we got him loaded up in the pickup and out to the field so he could see them. He wants to help, but there is not much his 88 year old body can do; he moves way to slow and his balance is not that good anymore. I just can't take the chance with him getting ran over, he just can't get out of the way. I'm kind of glad I was done before he got out the door. Now I smell like burnt hair.

Did u attend?
I like their disclaimer at the end. Lessons learned i suppose.
I went to Covington for their last sale. Winchester dispersal. I got 4 lil heifers to feed a while. Cows were high there as well. $2000 was the number for bred cows. I think they'd a went higher but my buddy stopped there.

A friend used to buy lots of cows and put together to sell at fairview. They always do well there, but I don't know how much longer they are gonna let that fly. I mean, he's very discriminating, buys nice stuff to put together, but they are still put together cows no matter how ya slice it.

I watched a year or so ago in Fairview, and some they sold were OBVIOUS put together/trader cows. Several different brands, multiple ear tag holes, non matching tags. They've really tried to put a stop to all that!

I probably missed a pair in Chehalis Friday. 1710 pounds cow and calf combined with the heifer calf at about 170 pounds. Angus 6-7 year old solid cow.

I figure with a split in late spring I could get $12-1400 for the calf and market the cow in June at $1.40. Probably a thousand less expenses to work with there

I finished out yesterday. They were still paying $3,000 for solid mouth cows bred for February/March calves. But the older cows dropped back from crazy. I was able to get 15 cows that fit my program. I bought my last one and left. While I was waiting for the brand release I could hear them still selling BM cows for a price which would work for me. I wanted to keep the purchase price on cows bought this winter under $1,500. I ended up with a $1,495.25 average on 60 cows. They have to average weighing over 1,200 lbs with some room to add weight. And if the vets are correct they should all calf in February/March (good luck with that).

I bought four yesterday bred six months for $1300 average. 1050 to 1100 lbs. SS and older. Thinish black cows looking like they need a good worming. The 7 month and above were quite a bit higher. At least they were all gentle.

segue: each buys what they want. i try to buy younger cows. was just wondering about the longevity result of the broke mouth purchases you made.

and yes prices are high everywhere. i quit bidding at one sale because everything, good, bad, and ugly was going for about the same price. saw one broke mount, four month bred with a limp brought nearly the same as others. that was time for me to leave.
