Branding iron question

After registering my brand through the county clerk's office I went to the area farm and ranch store to order a branding iron. A "box" with a letter inside. The guy at the farm and ranch store said that will not work as a brand, that it will always come out blotched because it is a "closed brand". Does any one have a closed brand? Box, circle, diamond, etc. Is there a way to make it work? Thanks for the input.

Steven- Make it a 2 iron brand- put the letter on first and then the box- The larger the box, the less problems with blotching- If you have a good branding iron maker he will undercut the corners of the box so that they will have less of a tendancy to blotch. Another thing you could do to is use a straight bar to make your box, but that would require you reapplying the iron 4 times. Oldtimer

Also do you know a good brand maker that I could get to make the brands, the letter would be easy, but doing the box correctly sounds very important. Again, Thanks for the help. Steven

Steven- undercutting is to cut a V shape in the corners so that their is a gap on the flat of the iron where all the heat is concentrated in the corner. That portion doesn't touch the animal.On a 4 inch high box you would probably have a 1/4 inch gap in the corner. Anyway you can gap the sharp corners on a brand will prevent blotching. A good example is a B. It will blotch easy, but if you use two irons ( a bar and a 3 ) you can make a great brand. Some people with an H or X will use just a bar and apply it two or three times to keep from blotching in the center of the brand. With your box you could use two L shaped irons and form a box too. Just imagine you're a rustler with a running iron and try to keep away from as many sharp or closed corners as you can. Their is getting fewer and fewer good iron makers, since all the old blacksmiths are disappearing- You might try a ranch supply store (some have a person that makes them up for them) or a welding shop. Some old welders are good and understand the blotching problem.

We have a set of their electric irons: 3 iron number set plus our brand unit (4 irons). Cost was under $350 for all. Excellent irons, construction, and service from them!
