Has anyone ever tried Braman and Charolais cross. A friend of mine has a half Charolais half Brahman cow that he breeds with a Charolais Bull and the calves from that cow grow off faster than any i've seen.Just wondering if anybody had any experiance with BrahmanXCharolias, are what you thought of that combo? Thanks.

I've never had any of these, but in my part of the country (Texas) this cross is not uncommon, and is referred to as Charbray. The fast growth you referred to is not surprising, based on my anecdotal evidence. But it seems to me that about the most popular cross in these parts involves breeding a Charolais bull to good tiger striped cows (tiger striped being the colloquial name for a 50% Hereford / 50%Brahman animal). The resulting calves are real fast growers and generally very stocky. They command some of the highest prices at sale barns even though they are not black. And since those resulting calves have less Brahman makeup they don't show as much "ear" as perhaps a 50/50 Charolais Brahman would.

Good point Arnold, You don't see to many Tigerstripes come through the sale here in N.Georgia, but when you do they sale good and everybody makes a fuse about how good they will grow off a calf.I always wondered what they were made up of.Thanks for your insight Aronald.Does it matter which way you go, Herford bull X Braham Cow,are Herford cow X Braham bull to get the tigerstripes?

you will have tigerstripe going both ways, but less "ear" with a herford bull on brahma cows

Of 12 bulls in my commercial herd I'm using four 50/50 Brahman-Charolais bulls and they are really awesome, they are very fertile and gives very good growth rates in the calves. The only thing to worry about is their bad temperament. By the way the other 8 are 4 Simbrahs and 4 Simmentals which are very docile but I'm really happy with the Charbray's performance.

Thanks everyone for your replys and anyother coments are welcome.

Alejandro, Have you had any calving problems at all with your Charolais X Braham bulls? This is the first time I have used a bull this large and my herd is mixed from blackbaldies,Angus, Gerts,& beefmasters. A couple of my blackbalies are small framed and I am wondering if I need to be concerned at calving time. What would you say is the average weight of your calves at birth from the Charolais X Braham bulls. Thanks.

I haven't had any calving problems, my commercial herd females are mainly of at least 3/4 Continental mix blood-1/4 Brahman. The calves average weight at birth is 65 lbs.
